Hewlett-Packard Is Going to Break Up With Itself

Hewlett-Packard said Monday it will break itself into two companies—one focused on PCs and printers, the other on technology consulting, cloud computing and related technology such as servers, storage and networking equipment.

It surely won’t confuse anyone that the PC-and-printer company will be called HP Inc., while its business-computing focused cousin will retain the Hewlett-Packard Inc. name. So both companies will now be known conversationally, as “HP,” at least until someone comes up with a better workaround.

For instance, current HP CEO Meg Whitman will continue to lead HP, while PC and printer chief Dion Weisler will become the CEO of HP. (OK, Whitman will run the business-computing company—should we call it “H-P”?—while Weisler gets to run HP.

Whitman said in a statement:

The decision to separate into two market-leading companies underscores our commitment to the turnaround plan. It will provide each new company with the independence, focus, financial resources, and flexibility they need to adapt quickly to market and customer dynamics, while generating long-term value for shareholders.
